1. Introduction

Information Retrieval Lab belongs to the School of Computer Science and Technology. It was founded by Professor Jun Ma who has studied in Kyushu University of Japan in 1980s. The Lab has made a series of outstanding achievements in the areas of big data processing and artificial intelligence, especially in natural language processing, recommendation system, information retrieval, social computing, health computing by integrating machine learning, deep learning and other technologies.

The Lab adheres to the combination of production, learning, research and application, and constantly enhances its innovation ability. The Lab has undertaken more than 30 national and provincial projects, including National Natural Science Funds and Shandong Province Natural Science Funds etc.  The Lab has published more than 200 papers on the top international conferences such as SIGIR, WWW, AAAI, CIKM, COLING, WSDM, ECAI, and top international journals such as TKDE, TOIS, JASIST, and obtained a number of patents. At present, the Lab has established stable internal cooperation with famous universities and organizations, such as Amsterdam University in the Netherlands, Montreal University in Canada, Microsoft Research Asia, etc. The Lab has carried out many projects jointly with Tencent, iFLYTEK, Hisense, Keda, Shandong provincial hospital and other well-known enterprises and institutions.

At present, the Lab has 3 professors, 1 research assistant, 7 PhD students, 23 master students, and more than 20 undergraduate research assistants. The students in the Lab have won dozens of presidential scholarships, national scholarships and dean scholarships, as well as many excellent doctoral dissertation and master thesis of Shandong University. The Lab has trained a large number of outstanding talents, including 22 PhDs and 73 masters. Most of the PhDs teach in famous universities at China and abroad. Most of the masters are distributed in top 100 enterprises such as Microsoft, Alibaba, Baidu, Jingdong, Tencent, Huawei, etc.

2. Research Interests

1)  Recommendation System

A series of innovative recommendation methods have been proposed in the fields of social recommendation, video recommendation, cross domain recommendation, conversational recommendation, fashion recommendation, sequential recommendation, medical recommendation, etc. More than 30 papers have been published in top international journals and conferences. The best paper runner up award of CIKM 2017 has been obtained. The relevant achievements have been applied to Hisense smart TV recommendation and other fields.

2) Natural Language Processing

A series of innovative methods and technologies have been put forward in the fields of document summarization, knowledge-based dialogue, personalized dialogue, emotional dialogue, conversational information retrieval, community QA, entity classification, etc. More than 20 papers have been published in top international journals and conferences. The best student paper award of NLPCC 2013 has been obtained. The relevant results have been applied to Tencent, iFLYTEK, Hisense and other enterprises.

3) Information Retrieval

A series of innovative methods and technologies have been designed in the fields of learn to rank, diversified retrieval, personalized retrieval, and query intention mining. More than 30 papers have been published in top international journals and conferences. The relevant achievements have been applied to Jinan Public Security Bureau and other units.
